Oxen-in-Training
November 9, 2008
We just brought these fellows home, today, from 'Raven Glen Ayrshires', a dairy farm south-west of us.
From left to right: "Chili", born August 30, "Pepper",
born August 18, "Bean", born October 14, and "Sprout", also born October 14.
They are between one and three months old; a good age to get started.
I have begun their training by getting them to trust me. Today, I spent some time just squatting low in their pen, with a fist-full of the last green grass of fall.

The calves were fairly tame when we got them, so I am already able to pet them when they eat.

Now that the calves let me touch them, I want to get them used to being tied up,
and to standing still, so I haltered them for the first time, and as I don't have a barn, I moved them into a small shed,
where they would be out of the weather.
I created a stall, so that the two larger calves would be separated from the smaller ones. I tied the calves to the front of the shed, with ropes just long enough that they can lie down, but not long enough to get tangled in, and I put food and water where they could reach it.
Now I will be able to start to really get them used to being handled ... Where did I put that brush?
